The Protection for Persons in Care Act for the Province of Alberta came into effect January 5,
1998. From January 5, 1998 to October 31, 2005, Protection for Persons in Care received 4714
reports of alleged abuse.

According to PPC data, emotional harm continues to be the most common type of abuse reported
(44% of all complaints) followed by bodily harm (28%).

Of the 4714 total reports received, 3035 (64%) involved service providers as alleged abusers,
1159 (24%) were clients/residents, 329 (7%) were family members and 221 (5%) were other
types of alleged abusers (including volunteers, visitors and other third parties).
